Medical sales recruiters: how to hire medical device and healthcare sales reps

Medical sales recruiters specialize in hiring salespeople for medical device, healthcare technology, diagnostics and pharmaceutical companies. The difference from general sales recruiting is access: the best medical sales reps already have relationships with the surgeons, clinics, hospital buyers or distributors you sell to, and they are rarely looking for a new job. A good medical sales recruiter finds those people, checks their results and approaches them directly.

What makes medical sales hiring different?

  • Clinical credibility. Reps often spend time in operating rooms, labs or clinics. They need to speak confidently with clinicians and understand procedures, not only pitch features.
  • Long, multi-person sales. Hospital and health-system purchases involve clinicians, procurement, finance and sometimes a value analysis committee. Reps need patience and the ability to manage many stakeholders.
  • Regulated selling. Reps must follow the rules on how products are promoted and what can be claimed. Experience in a regulated environment shortens ramp time.
  • Territory relationships. A rep who already knows the key accounts in your territory can be productive in weeks rather than months.

Which medical sales roles are hardest to fill?

Experienced medical device reps with a strong record in a specific specialty, territory managers for large regions, clinical specialists who also sell, and sales leaders who can build a team in a new market. Entry-level roles fill more easily, but the reps who can carry a full quota in year one are in short supply everywhere.

How do you find experienced medical sales reps?

  1. Define the account base. List the accounts and specialties the rep must cover. That tells you who already sells to them.
  2. Look at adjacent companies. Reps selling a related product to the same buyers bring relationships with them.
  3. Approach them directly. Strong reps are employed and not reading job ads. Direct outreach with a clear pitch is how they are reached.
  4. Verify the numbers. Ask for quota, attainment, rank and the size of their territory, and check them with references.
  5. Move quickly. Good candidates often have several conversations under way. A slow process loses them.

Our sales interview questions work well for medical roles too; add a question on how the candidate handles a value analysis committee.

How long does it take to hire a medical sales rep?

It depends on the specialty and territory, but slow searches are common because the pool of experienced reps is small. We fill roles within 45 days, with an average of 29 days, including medical and healthcare searches. We cover timing in more detail in how long it takes to hire a salesperson.

What should you ask a medical sales recruiter?

  • How do you find reps who already sell to accounts like ours?
  • How do you check a candidate’s quota and territory results?
  • Which medical sales roles have you filled recently?
  • How long does your guarantee last, and what does it cover?

Questions about medical sales recruiting

What does a medical sales recruiter do?

A medical sales recruiter finds, screens and approaches salespeople for medical device, healthcare and pharmaceutical companies. The value is in reaching experienced reps who already sell to the right accounts and aren’t looking for a job.

Do medical sales reps need a clinical background?

Not always. Some roles, such as clinical specialists, need clinical training. Many device and healthcare technology roles value a strong sales record and the ability to learn procedures more than a clinical degree.

Do you recruit healthcare sales reps as well as medical device reps?

Yes. We recruit across medical devices, diagnostics, healthcare technology and pharmaceutical sales, in Canada and the United States.
